On Saturday 10th February the Llangollen canal at Chirk came alive with some 40+ stand up paddleboarders assembling en masse from as far away as Kent on an expedition to travel through the tunnel and over the aqueduct.
We organiased the event as a follow up to the Lune aqueduct paddle back on New Years day. It quickly became extremelly popular with paddlers from the North-West, Cheshire, Cambridge and Kent in attendance due to the picturesque location and Grade II listed status of the tunnel and aqueduct.
Launching from the Boathouse at the marina, we paddled through the 421M tunnel with head torches on and boards decorated with lights and even a disco ball to light our way, over the 21M high aqueduct taking in the wonderful views across the Ceiriog valley and onto the Poachers Pocket.
After a halfway pitstop it was back over the aqueduct and through the tunnel once again, returning to the Boathouse for some well earned food and drink.
Contrary to the forecast, the weather was kind and everyone loved the 8Km journey and the hospitality from The Boathouse.
We’ve got our eyes on doing this paddle again when the weather’s better and hopefully attract more paddlers as it was great to meet new people from around the country.
Special shout out to Anna, Kate & Michal from SUPer Whale – for bringing a mountain of homemade cake.
And to everyone who came and took part. You all made the day a very special day and we look forward to seeing you all again.
